People management is the process of training, motivating and directing employees to optimize workplace productivity and promote professional growth. Workplace leaders, such as team leads, managers and department heads use people management to oversee workflow and boost employee performance every day. — indeed.com

In other words, people management is a set of practices that are used to boost the performance of people by using the available resources by their leaders.

Why do we have to manage people?

Handling conflicts, effective people management can mediate conflicts between the team and resolving these conflicts can boost the productivity of the team.

Deadlines, managing deadlines are a must. Effective people management will evaluate the team that you have and can adjust or set the deadlines of the work accordingly.

How do we manage people?

There are few main points that you need to have to manage people.

  • Empowering employees
    Empowering employees can be done in multiple ways, offering employees feedback for their work, allowing them to adjust the workflow if it can possibly affect their productivity positively, giving recognition and appreciation to them for their work that is well done, and supporting them on hard projects.

  • Active Listening
    If there is a time when people ask questions or feedback to you, you must actively listen to their requests or questions fully. The way to consistently engage with your employees can be by doing verbal or non-verbal cues such as nodding to indicate your agreement, and responding by giving your summary of their message to verify your understanding. These actions will promote positive interaction in the team.
  • Conflict-resolution
    Resolving a conflict will create a more positive vibe and boosts productivity for the people involved, having a resolving conflicts skills will be helpful as you can analyze the situation to identify the root of the conflict, may it miscommunication, different point-of-view by mediating both of the opposing to resulting in a compromise or the same understanding can resolve the conflicts, after the resolution came to view, monitoring them afterward to prevent more from happening.

  • Flexibility
    People has different style and point of view and those very people are our employees, knowing how to be flexible, adjusting employees from the standard workflow can actually be useful and boosts individual performance, some employees likes to do task in batch, and some likes to do tasks back and forward, by allowing them to do task their way and assessing the productivity individually can lead to a better productivity from them.
  • Patience
    Managing people can be tedious, you can be asked the same question many times in a day, that is why patience is a must, people management is a skill that will need you to have respect, empathy while helping others.
  • Clear communication
    Communication is mandatory for everything, people management needs them as much as everything, a skill that can enable people to work together, create new ideas, adapt and adjust to changes, avoid miscommunication, and communicating with the team will improve the team productivity by a ton!
  • Trust
    Building a trust in the team you are on will lead to you relying on them and working on your own work more efficiently. Leaders can build trust reliably by performing your task and technical skills when asked by the employees, and promote trust when you give them constructive feedback.

  • Organization
    Managing a team will involve handling multiple tasks at the same time, organization will help you to track team’s productivity such as keeping a calendar to actively track deadlines, daily meetings that discuss progression of the task, assigning tasks properly to the team, and also responding to emails, requests, and questions.
